Fairgrounds construction to start immediately

The imminent start of construction on the new Mud Street fairgrounds will make it a very Merry Christmas for members of the West Niagara Agriculture Society, says its president.

Stephen Capell said the last hurdle, design specifications for the site’s septic system, has been cleared and the contract has been awarded for construction which will begin immediately in 2014.

“Work on excavation and grading will get started right away.”

He noted that Brouwer was the right choice for the project as they have the experience and the company’s bid fulfilled the WNAS mandate to work with local contractors.

“That was very important for us. We only invited local bids for the work in the first place and required use of local sub-contractors and local resources available in the Niagara Region,” noted Capell.

The site, on Mud Street just west of Mountain Road on the West Lincoln side, will include a large pond.

“We are hoping that is dug and ready as soon as possible to catch the spring run-off. It is an important part of our fire safety plan as we have to ensure enough capacity to fight fires as if all three buildings on the site were on fire at the same time,” said Capell.

Included at the site will be three main buildings: an agriculture/livestock; indoor showroom, the saddle ring, and; community hall.

“This kind of facility is long overdue for Niagara. When done, we will be able to host indoor horse shows, pidgeon competitions, dog shows and other events,” said Capell.

“Our mergers of Lincoln and Smithville agriculture society boards has gone very well and we have a great working relationship with the Township of West Lincoln. Everyone has really come together to make this happen,” said Capell.

The site is expected to be ready to host its first fair this coming fall if all goes according to schedule.

“A lot of people have been waiting for this to get going. We are looking forward to proving to West Lincoln, Lincoln and Grimsby that people will accept a joint fall fair. We are very confident.”

“This announcement is a great way to end 2013 and go into 2014.”
